Invictus Games Toronto 2017 competitors have revelled in the positive energy from the spirited crowds that converged on Nathan Phillips Square for the final day of wheelchair tennis competition.

“The fans have been amazing,” said RJ Anderson of the United States.

“We’re playing in the centre of (Toronto’s) city hall. It’s an amazing public showing, every match has been sold out.

“It has been amazing to look up and see that Toronto has really showed up for this,” he said.

On the court it was the UK doubles team of Kevin Drake and Alexander Krol who prevailed, the duo defeating the New Zealand pairing of Glenn Barnes and Aaron Gibbs with a 6-4 result.

There were no double faults for team UK, with pairing Kirk Hughes and Cornelia Oosthuizen defeating the strong Aussie outfit of Stewart Sherman and Sean Lawler to claim bronze.

Over at the athletics, Toronto based competitor Michael Clarke continued his run of success, winning silver in the men’s IT5 1,500 metres wheelchair race. It was Clarke’s fourth medal of the Games after he nabbed bronze in the 100 metres, silver in the 200 metres and gold in the 400-metres men’s IT5 events.

In the men’s IF4 shot put, Ukraine competitor Serhii Torchynskyy threw a personal best distance of 13.71 metres to win bronze and secure his nation’s first ever Invictus Games medal.

“It’s impossible to describe how big my emotions are here at the Invictus Games,” said Torchynskyy, through a translator.

Preparing for the Invictus Games encouraged Torchynskyy to become actively involved in sport, work toward new achievements and train regularly in the gym.

“I personally feel the medal is a gold medal because the result from today is much stronger than in training. I feel like it’s a big achievement,” he said. Read the full story.
